Challenging the State? The Socialist and Feminist Educational Experience Falmer Press, 1990.

My first book, arising from my PhD replete with the obligatory plethora of references, considers the political and educational policies and actions of organisations to the left of the Labour Party in the period 1900-30. It looks at teacher politics, Socialist Sunday Schools, the Social Democratic Federation, National Federation of Women Teachers, the Communist Party and the Teachers Labour League. It challenges the previously held view that the state was strongly influenced by progressive ideas at this time.Through doing the research for this book I came across suffrage teachers and for the first time became interested in their activity… The publisher came up with the red and black at their own instigation (still my favourite colours).

Now out of print but can be picked up secondhand  at various prices, currently ranging from 1p to £78 .
