This introduction to the book People and their Pasts. Public History Today that  I wrote with Paul Ashton differentiates between the past and history. It looks at different ways of thinking about public history and drawing on the ideas of the late Raphael Samuel argues that history is not the prerogative of historians but is a social form of knowledge.
