Barry rescuing a child : memorial at the entrance of the Cimitiere des Chiens, Asnieres – sur – Seine, Paris

In this  article in the book Animal Death I discuss the 3 oldest ‘pet’ cemeteries in their respective countries: Hyde Park, London, Hartsdale outside New York and  the Cimitere des Chiens in Asnieres-sur-Seine in Paris. I  consider the ways in which human and animal space is  blurred in such localities. I also discuss both some of the  continuities  as well as changes in the human – animal relationship as depicted on gravestones.
